Bill C-231: A Path Towards Addiction Recovery

August 19, 2026

Addiction can change the course of a young person’s life, but it should never define their future.

Bill C-231 is about compassion, hope and giving youth struggling with addiction another chance.

The bill would give youth justice courts greater ability to delay sentencing so a young person can participate in a substance-use treatment program, and allow treatment to be included as part of certain youth justice orders.

Bill C-231 received unanimous consent at second reading, a strong sign that Canadians can come together around a simple principle: when a young person is struggling, we should give them a path toward treatment, rehabilitation and a better future.
